ED Physician Assistant - Certified

  • Examines patient, takes medical history, records results, and makes preliminary diagnosis or decides on follow-up procedures.

  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests such as X rays, electrocardiograms, and blood work, and interprets test results.

  • Performs therapeutic procedures, such as immunizations, injections, suturing and wound care, and managing infections.

  • Exercises professional judgment regarding consultation with supervising physicians concerning appropriate treatment.

  • Develops and implements patient care plans, instructs and counsels patients, and maintains records of treatment and results.

  • Prescribes medications to the extent allowable by state guidelines and clinic regulations.

  • Provides general health education regarding matters such as proper diet, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.

  • Assists physician, as required, for emergency treatment and more complex procedures.


  • Completion of a 4-year accredited physician assistant baccalaureate program and 1 year of clinical training; or

  • Completion of a 2-year accredited physician assistant (PA) program (which, in turn, requires 2 years of undergraduate study), plus 2 years of clinical training following completion of PA program.

  • State accreditation based on certifying exam. Continued employment requires 100 hours of continuing medical education every 2 years and passing a recertification examination every 6 years.
